Ninety minutes from Orlando is not a weekend. It is a morning.
People search this as a day trip because they are already here for something else. Theme parks. Family. A Gainesville Saturday. The springs are close enough to use, far enough that the water still looks like Florida before the queues. You do not need a hotel in Ocala. You need a start time and a full tank.

Silver or Rainbow. Not both. A single two- or three-hour rental is the right size for a day trip.
Drive home wet
Towel in the car. A change of clothes. You can be back in Orlando, Tampa, or Gainesville the same afternoon.

One day, one river
Do not split the day. Choose.
If the reason you left Orlando is wildlife — monkeys in the cypress, a chance at manatees in winter, a wilder bank — book clear kayak rentals at Silver Springs. That is the cinematic paddle, just east of Ocala.
If the reason is color — turquoise water, sand, an easy current, room to paddleboard Rainbow River — book Dunnellon. Rainbow is the brighter, more open day. Manatees are almost never a Rainbow story. Otters sometimes are.
Both runs stay near 72 degrees. Both take the same kind of morning to reach from the parks. The booking page lists each rental by park and trip length, so you are not guessing which launch you paid for.

How far are the springs from Orlando?+
Both rivers sit about 90 minutes from the Orlando area, depending on traffic. That is a morning drive, a two- or three-hour paddle, and time to be back before dinner. Weekend I-4 and Florida’s Turnpike add time. Leave early.
Can I do this as a day trip from Tampa or Gainesville?+
Yes. Tampa is about the same drive as Orlando, closer to Rainbow River if you come up I-75. Gainesville is nearer still, about an hour to Silver Springs. The outing is built for a single day, not an overnight.
Which river should I book for one day?+
Book Silver Springs if you want cypress, wildlife, and a storied spring run just east of Ocala. Book Rainbow River if you want brighter water, an open sky, and a slower Dunnellon afternoon. You cannot do both well in one day. Pick one.
How much of the day should I set aside?+
Count on the drive each way, arrival time at the park, a two- or three-hour rental, and a little slack. A two-hour slot is plenty if you are squeezing it between parks. A three-hour slot is the fuller day.
Is this better than staying on the Orlando lakes?+
The lakes around the parks are pretty. They are not clear. The reason to make this drive is water you can see through: 72-degree spring, eelgrass, sand, and the view through a clear hull.
Do I need to stay in Ocala?+
No. Most guests come out for the day and go back. If you want a slower morning, stay nearby the night before. The booking page lists start times; morning slots leave more daylight for the drive home.
